We the undersigned, and our friends and neighbours, have witnessed the negative affects of the affordability crisis. We recognize that Whitby Town Council and Durham Region Council can play a significant role in cooling down this crisis by working towards a two-year property tax freeze.
We call on the next Mayor of Whitby to exercise strong mayor powers to do whatever reasonable and possible to freeze the tax rate. Given Whitby's strong financial position we believe this will be possible to do without layoffs or reducing direct services to residents. Durham Region will soon have a new provicially appointed Chair who will be given similiar budgt powers during the budget process. We call on the next Regional chair to resisit the calls for a 10 % tax hike and work towards a tax freeze as well.
We know that Chris Leahy will present this petition at the very first regularly scheduled council meeting and are willing to be invited to watch or speak as delegates.
